3 PART LECTURE SERIES

Delivering a fully integrated language between ancient invention
and modern science

01

Approaches

The first part of the course looks at key concepts within Chinese medicine - qì, xīn, shèn - that traditionally do not have precise translations into Western languages. These concepts are essential to define in Western terms in order to successfully integrate these important approaches into Western settings.

02

Structures

The second part of the course looks at the structures of the acupuncture system. The channels and the acupoints are defined in clear, physiological terms to transform the understanding of the system as a whole.

03

Mechanisms

The third part of the course explores the core mechanisms of acupuncture. The exact effects of acupuncture on the cardiovascular and nervous systems are broken down giving a deep understanding and answer to the question “how does it work?”

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The course is an 8 week program blending pre-recorded lectures, to watch on-demand at your own pace and schedule, with live online tutorials where students are invited to ask questions and have in-depth discussions with the tutor and their peers.

I absolutely loved the information and your in-depth yet concise explanations of how acupuncture works. The research was fascinating and mostly new to me. Thank you for all the work you are doing for our profession.

I loved the lectures and it was a breath of fresh air listening to you using normal language and approach to acupuncture. Plus the importance of your science background is key as I work with a lot of professional athletes and still so many will not buy into acupuncture due to the old school language that is used.

I've been really struggling the past couple years with the lack of scientific understanding practitioners have, myself included. It has always bothered me that I couldn't explain things in a scientific way and I've really started doubting what I do. I have delved into study after study in order to have more understanding and credibility. Your course was exactly what I've been looking for and I really hope you do more in the future.

Talia Dahms
L.Ac., MSTOM

I am so excited to have questions answered that I have had since being an acupuncture student. I wish your course was a requirement in school!

Thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge!

In my opinion, it is important to do research to understand and analyse what science can explain but without losing sight of the whole model, the system and context in which they are inserted. This context in which everything changes, everything is in relation and is inter-influenced and in which each human cell tends towards homeostasis and self-regulation. Congratulations Clare you have done this and your research is very interesting for me.

It should be mandatory to teach this in all acupuncture schools.

Hi, I am Clare Foley

Acupuncturist, biophysicist, lecturer

I trained as an acupuncturist and naturopath in Dublin for four years. After spending a month in Beijing doing intensive training in acupuncture, I was so impressed with the medical system, which fully integrated TCM with conventional medical care, that I spent a further six months training at the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. I learned to speak Mandarin Chinese at an elementary and received one-on-one training from expert doctors using acupuncture in a wide range of hospital departments. It sparked a longing in me to see this integrated system in my own country. I would have to figure out how acupuncture works!

I received my undergraduate science degree in Experimental Physics and Biology from Maynooth University, Ireland in 2015, followed by a two year Masters in Biophysics at the KU Leuven in Belgium, 2018. Doing fundamental research on single neurons in live organisms gave me insight into global brain dynamics, the cutting-edge of neuroscience research today. I have developed an understanding of the mechanisms of acupuncture to a depth that is rare in the field. I continue to develop and publish research to date and I advocate for the introduction of acupuncture to mainstream medical practice at the local and international level.

You have questions. We have answers.

Is a background in science or biology necessary?

A background in science is not necessary, all concepts will be fully explained within lectures. Tutorial sessions are meant for addressing questions and the worksheets are helpful for guiding understanding.

Do I need to be an acupuncturist to take these courses?

No, a full knowledge of Chinese medicine is not required but some familiarity with concepts such as qi and acupuncture channels will be useful.

Is there any required reading material to complete the course?

Additional reading material will be provided alongside some lectures for those wanting to delve deeper but is not essential to complete the course. The recommended reading lists are simply intended to quench the thirst for avid learners and to enrich tutorial discussions for all students.

Is there anything new here for an experienced acupuncturist?

The structure allows for those new to Chinese medicine and those with long experience to gain new information not provided by current textbooks on acupuncture.

What happens during the live tutorials?

Clare will answer any questions from students that are asked in the meeting and the material from the worksheets will be covered to make sure everyone can easily obtain their CPD certificates. Comments and debate are also welcome as this is an opportunity to converse as a group of acupuncture professionals.

What if I can't make it to the live tutorial?

Tutorial sessions will be recorded for those unable to attend live and can be accessed by all graduates even after the course has finished.

Can I get a certificate of completion for my CPD points?

The Science of Acupuncture is a provider under the NCCAOM credit system. Graduates can receive a certificate of completion after they finish the worksheets at the end of the pre-recorded lectures.

When are the next live tutorials taking place?

The next live online tutorials are beginning Sunday July 14th, 21st, 28th and finish August 4th.
